2007 Beef Expo Results Overview

Each year Penn State University hosts the Pennsylvania Beef Exposition, offering a busy weekend of cattle sales, youth competitions, cattle shows and tradeshows. This year’s Expo, held March 29 through April 1, kicked off on Friday with the Performance Tested Bull Sale at the Samuel E. Hayes Livestock Evaluation Center, in which 97 bulls were sold.  

That evening, 4-H youth competed in the Beef Quiz Bowl contest, held at the Penn State Meats Lab. Five junior teams and eight senior teams battled in one round eliminations. 

Junior Team:
1st Wyoming Co., comprised of Rachael Smarkusky, 14, Elizbeth Trowbridge, 10, Maria Trowbridge, 13, and Dakota Quick, 9.
2nd  Berks Co., Jessica Spatz, 11, Amber Dietrich, 11, Tori Dietrich, 11, and Matt Wanner, 9. 


Senior Team

1st Berks County, Rachael Kirkoff, 14, Alyssa Dietrich, 15, Cassandra Spatz, 16, and Shane Yerk, 16.
2nd Adams Co. Jr. Beef Producers Sr. Boys, Jacob Oyler, 17, Derek Byers, 19, Dwight Byers, 17, and Cody Woung, 15.


Saturday began bright and early with the Youth Skill-a-thon contest at 8 A.M. It consisted of written questions on the topics of meat cuts, feed stuffs and forages, equipment used for cattle handling, quality health and assurance, and cattle management.  

Placings are as follows:
            Junior Individual:
            1st - Tori Dietrich, Berks Co.
            2nd - Amber Dietrich, Berks Co.
            Junior Team:
            1st - Berks Co.
            2nd - Dover Co.
            Intermediate Individual:
            1st - Morgan Livingston, York Co.
            2nd - Rachael Kirkhoff, Berks Co.
            Intermediate Team:
            1st - Adams Co.          
            2nd - Berks Co.
            Senior Individual:
            1st - Melanie Wenger, Adams Co.
            2nd - Krista Moser
            Senior Team:
            1st - Adams Co.
            2nd - Adams Co.

Following the Skill-a-thon, youth competed in the Junior Heifer Show, which featured more than 100 heifers of six different breeds. Overall Champion Heifer was the Maine-Anjou breed champion, exhibited by Lacy Murray of Garrit, Pa. Reserve Champion was awarded to the champion crossbred heifer, exhibited by Dane Logan of Greensburg, Pa.

Sunday was a day of arduous competition, beginning with the showmanship contest, in which a record number of individuals participated.

Champion Senior Showman- Courtney Reinhart, Everett, Pa.
Reserve Champion Senior Showman- Denton Grim, East Berlin, Pa.
Champion Intermediate Showman- Hannah Grim, East Berlin, Pa.
Reserve Champion Intermediate Showman- Lindsay Curtis, Landisburg, Pa.
Champion Junior Showman- Madison Kauffman, of Bellefonte, Pa.
Reserve Champion Junior Showman- Hunter Voight, Fredericksburg, Pa.

The competition continued into the afternoon with 19 classes of 125 steers. The middleweight steers won the day, as Ryan Nolt, of New Holland, Pa., was awarded champion steer and Hannah Zundel, of New Alexandria, Pa., was named reserve champion steer.

The weekend proved to be another successful exposition, complete with fellowship with friends, tough competition and outstanding cattle and youth, both for which the industry can be proud.
